Arithmetic foundations and reading a calculation question

Objective: read a calculation question systematically and use multiplication, division and decimals without slips.

Accuracy comes before speed. Before calculating, underline three things: what is given (with units), what is asked for (with its unit), and any instruction about rounding. If no rounding is stated, keep full precision.

Worked example: “A fictional training tablet contains 2.5 mg. How many milligrams are in 3 tablets?” Given: 2.5 mg per tablet, 3 tablets. Asked: mg. 3 × 2.5 mg = 7.5 mg. Estimate check: 3 × about 2 = about 6, so 7.5 is a sensible size.

Common mistakes: misplacing the decimal point; rounding an intermediate result; answering a different quantity from the one asked.
